Overview
Punctuation organizes grammatical units and their relationships. Before adding a comma or semicolon, find the finite verbs and decide which clauses can stand alone. An independent clause states a complete thought; an although or because clause depends on a main clause. The mark must fit that structure, not merely a pause in your reading voice.
The exhibit opened on time and the labels were unfinished are independent clauses. The draft joins them with only a comma, creating a comma splice. The exhibit opened on time, but the labels were unfinished adds a coordinating conjunction that expresses the contrast. A semicolon could also join two independent clauses without but. In The sensor failed; it could not record the temperature, each side has its own subject and predicate. Removing it after the semicolon would leave an incomplete second unit.
However is not a coordinating conjunction. The map was outdated; however, we found the entrance uses a semicolon between complete clauses and a comma after the introductory conjunctive adverb. A comma before however alone cannot do the semicolon's job. By contrast, Although the road was wet, the driver continued slowly joins a dependent introduction to a main clause. A semicolon after wet wrongly treats the dependent clause as independent. A because clause can follow a main clause directly: The staff reviewed the application because one document was missing.
A colon may introduce a list after a complete clause: We brought three tools: a hammer, a level, and a wrench. We brought: a hammer interrupts a verb and its objects, so it does not provide that complete introduction. Separators within a list still matter. For an introductory purpose phrase, To reach the overlook, follow the path behind the museum places the comma at the phrase boundary rather than inside reach the overlook.
Modifiers can require paired punctuation. The town library, which stands beside the river, closes at six encloses supplementary information about the already identified library. One missing comma leaves the boundary incomplete. Workshops that require registration fill quickly uses a defining modifier to identify only the relevant workshops, so it does not separate that clause with commas. Neither construction permits an arbitrary comma between the full subject and its main verb.
Apostrophes mark possession differently from plurality. One student's notebook uses apostrophe-s; several students' folders places the apostrophe after the regular plural s. Read the ownership context before choosing. On a new edit, label clause independence, identify any list or modifier boundary, and then apply the mark. Finally, read the whole sentence to check that the intended reason, contrast, or ownership remains intact.

Sentence editing: clauses
Draft: The trail was closed for repairs, hikers used the river path instead.
Which revision correctly joins the two clauses and keeps their cause-and-effect relationship? A. The trail was closed for repairs, so hikers used the river path instead. B. The trail was closed for repairs hikers used the river path instead. C. The trail was closed for repairs, however hikers used the river path instead. D. Because the trail was closed for repairs. Hikers used the river path instead.
The supported answer is A: The trail was closed for repairs, so hikers used the river path instead. Both parts are independent clauses, and a comma with the coordinating conjunction so joins them while stating the result. Choice C adds a joining word, but however signals contrast rather than cause and still cannot join two clauses with only a comma.
Find the finite verbs, decide whether each clause can stand alone, and use a joining word or mark that fits that structure.
