Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a powerhouse school in science, engineering, management, humanities, arts, and social sciences at the undergraduate and graduate level. It pioneered the interdisciplinary approach, combining fields to solve real-world problems.

MIT's acceptance rate hovers around 5%, making it one of the most selective colleges globally. While getting into MIT is highly competitive, here is an overview of the minimum academic profile typically needed:

Test Scores:

SAT: 1550+

Below are the SAT score statistics published by MIT.

CombinedReading and WritingMath
25th percentile1520740780
75th percentile1580780800

While the middle 50% SAT range is 1520-1580, the mininum score you should aim for is 1550, and this score assumes the rest of your profile is very strong. Anything lower and you will not have a very good chance of admission.

Academics:

High School GPA: 3.8+

Being such a competitive school, MIT has very high standards when it comes to GPA. Your unweighted GPA should be at least 3.8 to stand a chance of getting in.

Coursework

Take the most advanced math and science options at your high school. We recommend a combination of math, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science and statistics. If you have the opportunity to take local college classes (e.g. multivariable calculus, linear algebra) in your junior or senior year, we recommend doing so as well.

AP Courses: 7+

Ideally in STEM and humanities with mostly scores of 5. Calculus BC, Physics C, Chemistry and Computer Science A are all good choices.

Extracurriculars:

STEM Research and Projects

Pursue meaningful STEM activities like science fair, coding projects, or academic lab research to exhibit passion.

We're seeing many students work with college professors or grad students on summer research projects their - if you can participate in such a program the experience and recommendation letter will no doubt help your application.

Leadership in STEM organizations

Demonstrate STEM impact through leadership in clubs, competitions, or tutoring peers.

While grades/scores provide the foundation, MIT also values creativity, hands-on building, and desire to solve global issues through technology and science. The minimum profile above gets you in the door - but standing out from thousands of exceptional applicants requires going far beyond the minimum.
