How does water’s molecular structure produce its biologically important properties?
Short answer
Water is polar, so neighboring molecules form temporary hydrogen bonds whose collective behavior produces cohesion, adhesion, thermal buffering, evaporative cooling, and surface tension.
Misconception · Hydrogen bonds do not make permanent chains
Mistake: water molecules are locked together by bonds as strong as the O–H bonds inside each molecule.
Correction: intermolecular hydrogen bonds are individually weaker and continually rearrange; their collective effect matters because many are present.
