Frequently asked questions

What does SSAT stand for?

SSAT stands for Secondary School Admission Test. It is an admission test used by many independent, private and boarding schools for students applying to grades 4 through 12.

Who runs the SSAT?

E3n, the nonprofit formed when the Enrollment Management Association (EMA) merged with the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) in 2026. E3n also runs the ISEE. Families register at admission.org.

Is the SSAT the same as the SAT?

No. The SSAT is for students in grades 3 through 11 applying to private and boarding schools. The SAT is a different test, from a different organization, that high school students take for college admission.

What is the difference between a scaled score and a percentile on the SSAT?

A scaled score is your result on the SSAT's scale for your level (for example 500 to 800 per section on the Upper Level). A percentile compares you with other first-time test takers in your grade over the last three years, and it is the number most schools focus on.

Definitions follow E3n's official SSAT pages and help center at admission.org, checked November 6, 2026. Fees are U.S. and Canada prices.
