HSPT: Complete Exam and Timing Guide

The High School Placement Test helps participating high schools assess incoming students for admission, course placement, and related decisions. It combines word and number reasoning with learned reading, mathematics, and language skills. This course provides daily practice for the five-part core battery; practice results are not official HSPT scores.

Updated October 2, 2026

Who it is for: Eighth graders preparing to enter high school; families should confirm that their intended schools require the HSPT.

Version covered: Core Closed HSPT preparation, checked October 2, 2026. The current owner website is read alongside its publicly available 2021 interpretive manual. No secure 2026–27 form or current school-only administration script was accessed.

The complete test and its timing

The five standard core clocks total 141 minutes (2 hours 21 minutes) for 298 multiple-choice questions: 16 + 30 + 25 + 45 + 25 minutes. Registration, directions, answer-sheet information, breaks, and any optional test extend the appointment. Ask the administering school for arrival and dismissal times; do not use 141 minutes as the complete visit length.

Versions and eligibility

Closed HSPT

A secure school-administered version with a new form annually and STS scoring. This is the guide’s principal reference.

Open HSPT

Schools may purchase materials and score locally. Confirm the school’s chosen format and directions.

Pre-HSPT

A seventh-grade practice edition with seventh-grade norms; this annual bank is not a separate Pre-HSPT program. Optional tests are unavailable with Pre-HSPT in the public manual.

Optional Science

A school may select the 40-item Science test:25 minutes, covering broad science achievement. This adds 25 working minutes to the standard core, for 166 total; it is not included in this core annual bank.

Optional Catholic Religion

A school may select the 40-item Catholic Religion test:20 minutes. This adds 20 working minutes to the standard core, for 161 total; it is not included in this core annual bank.

School-selected local assessment

The manual allows a local multiple-choice optional assessment of up to 40 items. Its topic and timing require school confirmation. Other admissions writing or interviews are separate local requirements, not universal core HSPT sections.

Breaks and navigation

  • The core clocks are separate. Do not assume unused time transfers to another section; follow the proctor’s start and stop instructions.
  • A universal break schedule and current form-specific skipping or review directions were not found in the public owner materials inspected. Obtain these from the testing school and the actual test directions.
  • Check answer-sheet numbering whenever skipping an item or returning to it if permitted. Continue only in the section and time window authorized by the proctor.
  • School appointment examples vary. Woodlands’ current page contains inconsistent estimated dismissal times, so confirm its actual pickup arrangements rather than choosing one estimate.

Calculators and permitted tools

  • Calculators are prohibited in Quantitative Skills and Mathematics under standardized conditions.
  • Practice these sections with pencil-and-paper arithmetic, estimation, fractions, percentages, and unit conversion.
  • Ask the school about an approved accommodation and permitted materials. A practice-site tool or an optional score calculator does not establish test-day permission.

How scoring works

  • The raw count is the number correct; wrong answers do not subtract points. Answering remaining items can therefore help when the section’s directions and remaining time permit.
  • STS converts raw performance using form-specific scaling. Reported standard scores run 200–800; percentiles 1–99 describe relative standing, and stanines run 1–9.
  • The Cognitive Skills composite combines Verbal and Quantitative; Basic Skills combines Reading, Mathematics, and Language. The battery composite uses all five. Optional-test scores are excluded.
  • National percentile compares performance with the national norm group; local percentile uses the school or program’s defined comparison group. Neither is percent correct, and percentile differences are not equal score intervals.
  • A grade-equivalent score compares performance on the tested skills with a grade-based reference; it does not establish readiness for that grade’s curriculum or prescribe placement.
  • The Cognitive Skills Quotient (CSQ) combines age with Verbal and Quantitative performance. The manual gives an operational range of 55–145 and mean 100; this course does not compute CSQ.
  • Composites are scaled independently. Averaging section standard scores or converting this daily bank’s percent correct does not reproduce an official composite.
  • Ask each school how it uses scores for admission, placement, or scholarships. This course does not set an admission cutoff, guarantee acceptance, or supply unpublished raw-score conversions.

What happens on test day

  • Before testing, confirm the address, arrival time, permitted belongings, admission paperwork, score recipients, and any additional assessment directly with the school.
  • Bring the materials in your local instructions. Woodlands, for example, asks for two No. 2 pencils; that example is not a universal admission-ticket or identification rule.
  • Follow the proctor while completing identifying information and school-choice codes. Check the name and selected score destinations carefully.
  • Work through the separately timed sections as directed. Allow time for section instructions and approved breaks, then complete any school-selected optional assessment.
  • Ask how and when the school releases results and how a copy can be sent to another school. STS describes local score-distribution systems rather than one national recipient-code system.

Registration and retakes

  • Register through the administering school or diocese. STS does not coordinate a national test-day calendar; fees, deadlines, and dates are local.
  • Confirm whether one sitting can send scores to multiple schools and whether a scholarship program requires testing at a particular site.
  • STS recommends one HSPT sitting per student. A school or diocese may authorize a retest in exceptional circumstances; ask before making a second booking.

Accommodations

  • Contact the testing school early. Schools review documentation and approve their own arrangements; STS supplies the test and reporting services.
  • Confirm the approved timing, format, setting, breaks, and materials in writing. Do not assume an existing classroom plan automatically establishes HSPT arrangements.
  • The public manual describes alternative materials requested by schools. Ask the school what is available for its current form and your needs.

How to prepare

  • For Verbal Skills, state precise word meanings and the direction of an analogy. For logical conclusions, use only the given premises.
  • For Quantitative Skills, test a pattern against every given transition and compare quantities using exact values or counterexamples.
  • For Reading, distinguish the whole-passage idea from a detail, and support an inference with an actual passage clue.
  • For Mathematics, estimate, compute without a calculator, and check the requested units and the meaning of the denominator.
  • For Language, identify the true subject, clause boundaries, pronoun role, and relationship between sentences before selecting a revision.
  • Use untimed daily items to learn methods, then selected timed sets to practice pacing. One daily item does not recreate sustained 298-question testing.

Details to confirm

  • No public full STS released test was located. The official preview is school-restricted; no restricted material was requested or copied.
  • The public publisher excerpt is a historical, unendorsed reference with detected item and count defects. Its content was not copied into the bank or used to override STS specifications.
  • The 365-item annual bank covers the five core sections. It does not supply optional Science, Catholic Religion, a school-specific local test, or a distinct Pre-HSPT bank.
  • There is no official raw-to-scaled conversion, psychometric calibration, or complete proctored exam simulation. Independent expert editorial approval remains a publication gate.
  • Standard clocks do not establish accommodated timing, school arrival rules, or universal breaks. Confirm current school instructions.
