ISEE registration fees can swing by more than $100 depending on your child's grade and the testing format you choose, so it pays to understand the full price list before you click "pay." This 2026-2027 guide breaks down every base fee, the late and walk-in surcharges, the rescheduling rules, and the fee waiver programs most parents miss.
Before you can read an ISEE fee table accurately, you need to know one thing: E3n sets ISEE registration fees by grade band, not by test level name. The official ISEE has four named levels - Primary, Lower, Middle, and Upper - but on the price list, those levels collapse into two pricing tiers.
The Primary Level covers students entering grades 2, 3, and 4 and is offered as three separate tests (Primary 2, Primary 3, and Primary 4) of roughly 53 to 65 minutes. Because Primary tests are shorter and don't include the verbal/quantitative reasoning sections, E3n charges the lower of the two pricing tiers and does not offer Primary testing at Prometric centers.
The Lower Level (entering grades 5-6), Middle Level (grades 7-8), and Upper Level (grades 9-12) all share the same fee. They are longer assessments with four scored sections - verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and mathematics achievement - plus an unscored essay. Because these tests are administered identically and run about three hours, E3n groups them under a single grades 5-12 fee tier.
When you compare prices online, watch out for fee tables that label rows by level name (e.g., "Lower Level"). Those labels are just convenient shorthand for the underlying grade band: 2-4 versus 5-12. If you read the wrong row, you'll budget the wrong amount.
E3n offers four ISEE delivery formats (at a school, at home, in an ISEE office, or at a Prometric center), and the choice can swing your total ISEE test cost by more than $100. Below is the full 2026-2027 fee schedule, followed by a side-by-side breakdown of each format.
| Testing Format | Grades 2-4 | Grades 5-12 |
|---|---|---|
| At-home, school-administered | $130 | $170 |
| At-home, ISEE-administered | $185 | $250 |
| At-home, office-administered (accommodations only) | $185 | $250 |
| At a member school (online or paper) | $130 | $170 |
| In-office, group testing | $185 | $225 |
| In-office, individual testing | $210 | $255 |
| Prometric center, group testing | Not offered | $250 |
At-home ISEE testing comes in two flavors that look identical to the student but cost very different amounts. School-administered at-home testing means a teacher or admissions officer at a member school proctors the test remotely - this is the cheaper option at $130 (grades 2-4) or $170 (grades 5-12). ISEE-administered at-home testing uses a proctor supplied by E3n and runs $185 (grades 2-4) or $250 (grades 5-12), so the price gap is $55 to $80 per test. A third option, office-administered at-home testing, is for students with approved accommodations and costs the same as ISEE-administered at-home testing. Every at-home test needs a second camera and a practice check-in at least three days before test day.
Testing in person at a member school is priced the same as school-administered at-home: $130 for grades 2-4, $170 for grades 5-12. Both online and paper versions cost the same. This is the most popular budget-friendly option for families who live near a member school and prefer a familiar testing environment.
E3n also operates regional ISEE testing offices. Group testing in-office is $185 for grades 2-4 and $225 for grades 5-12, while individual one-on-one sittings - sometimes preferred for students with focus or anxiety needs - run $210 (grades 2-4) and $255 (grades 5-12). Individual testing is the most expensive non-Prometric option.
Prometric is a commercial testing partner used for many standardized exams. The ISEE Prometric fee is $250 for grades 5-12 - and it's not available for the Primary Level (grades 2-4). Prometric centers run on year-round availability with stricter rescheduling and cancellation rules, which we cover in detail below.
Worked Example
Setup: A family applying to seventh grade (grades 5-12 band) is choosing between school-administered at-home testing and an in-office individual sitting.
Pick your grade band, format, and timing to estimate the total ISEE bill, including any late or walk-in fee. Late and walk-in fees apply only to paper tests at a school.
The base ISEE fee assumes you register before the regular window closes. For paper tests, missing it adds $45 (late) or $60 (walk-in). Online tests at a school stay open until 3 days before the test with no late fee, and registering by phone costs nothing extra in 2026-2027.
| Registration Window | Grades 2-4 | Grades 5-12 |
|---|---|---|
| Standard paper registration (21+ days before test) | $130 | $170 |
| Late registration, paper (20-14 days before) | $175 | $215 |
| Walk-in registration, paper (13 days or fewer) | $190 | $230 |
| Phone registration | No extra fee | No extra fee |
The standard ISEE registration window closes 21 days before your chosen test date. Inside that window but at least 14 days out, registrations enter the late tier and add $45 (grades 2-4: $175 total; grades 5-12: $215 total). With 13 days or fewer until the test, you can only register as a walk-in, and only at a school that offers walk-in seats; it adds $60 (grades 2-4: $190; grades 5-12: $230). The test site gives you a walk-in code to finish the registration online. Both fees apply to paper tests only.
Older guides listed a $30 to $35 fee for registering by phone. The 2026-2027 Quick Facts guide lists phone registration at no additional fee: call ISEE Operations at 1 (800) 446-0320, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday. Online registration at iseeonline.erblearn.org costs the same and works around the clock.
A walk-in registration turns a $170 paper test into $230, a 35% increase, just for registering late. The cheapest path for a paper test is to register at least 21 days before the test date.
Worked Example
Setup: A grades-5-12 family realizes 11 days before a paper test date that they haven't registered.
Plans change. The good news: E3n lets you reschedule or cancel an ISEE registration. The catch is that the ISEE rescheduling fee depends entirely on which format you booked and how close to test day you are.
| Test Format | When You Change | Reschedule Fee | Cancellation Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| At-home / At-school / In-office | 1 or more days before | $50 | $55 |
| Prometric center | 31+ days before | Free | Free |
| Prometric center | 30-15 days before | $25 | $25 |
| Prometric center | 14-5 days before | $45 | $45 |
| Prometric center | 4-1 days before | $75 | No refund |
For non-Prometric formats, E3n charges $50 to reschedule and $55 to cancel as long as you make the request at least one day before the scheduled test. On or after the test date you can't reschedule, and a cancellation isn't refunded. The Quick Facts guide calls these minimum fees, so confirm the amount in your ISEE account before you change a booking.
Prometric centers operate on a four-tier timing matrix. Changes made 31+ days before the test are free. From 30 to 15 days out, both reschedules and cancellations cost $25. From 14 to 5 days out, the fee climbs to $45. Inside 4 days, rescheduling jumps to $75 and cancellations carry no refund. The closer you cut it, the more you pay.
Pick how far out from the test you need to make a change to see exactly what Prometric will charge.
E3n refunds a cancelled test only if you cancel within 90 days of the original registration payment, counted from the registration date, not the test date. Outside that window you get no refund. Mark the original registration date on your calendar so you don't lose this option.
E3n partners with member schools to offer ISEE fee waivers to families demonstrating financial need. The single most important fact about waivers is that you do not apply through E3n - applications go through the schools your child is applying to. Many qualifying families miss out simply because they don't know to ask.
| Waiver Type | Where to Apply | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| National Fee Waiver | Member school admissions office | At-school and at-home ISEE registration |
| Prometric Fee Waiver | Member school admissions office | Test fee at Prometric testing centers |
| Official prep package | Same waiver code | The official ISEE test preparation package |
E3n runs two distinct ISEE fee waiver programs. The National Fee Waiver covers registration for the at-school and at-home testing formats. The Prometric Fee Waiver covers a Prometric center sitting separately. Schools can issue either or both depending on availability and the family's needs.
Every waiver request runs through a member school's admissions office. Families typically reach out by email or phone, explain their financial situation, and ask whether the school distributes ISEE National or Prometric waivers for the upcoming season. Schools have their own internal criteria, so policies vary.
Fee waivers also cover the official ISEE test preparation package: families use the same waiver code to sign up for it and to register for the test.
The base fee is the headline number, but a realistic ISEE budget should also account for optional services and the possibility of a second attempt. Here's what to consider when you build a complete ISEE expense plan.
The 2026-2027 Quick Facts guide lists no expedited scoring option. Online tests post scores in three to five days; paper tests take five to ten days for grades 5-12 and seven to fourteen days for grades 2-4. Two optional services cost extra: hand scoring of a Lower, Middle, or Upper Level paper test to verify the machine score ($55), and renorming a score for a lower grade when a student may repeat a grade ($45).
Your registration fee includes score reports sent to the schools you specify during registration. If your child applies to additional schools after the test, you can send extra reports from your ISEE account. Many independent schools also accept self-reported ISEE scores during the application phase, so check each school's policy before paying for additional sends.
Students are allowed to take the ISEE once per testing season, for a maximum of three attempts in a 12-month admission cycle. The seasons are fall (August-November), winter (December-March), and spring/summer (April-July). Each retake is a fresh registration with its own full fee, so plan your budget accordingly if your child may retake to improve scores.
