Where can you find a free full-length ISEE practice test?
The best free full-length practice comes from ISEE itself. ISEE is run by E3n, the nonprofit formed when ERB merged with the Enrollment Management Association, and it offers three free options (ISEE preparation page, checked October 19, 2026):
Online sample tests for every level. They copy the look of the real online exam and end with a sample score report, so they're the best way to get used to the testing screen.
What to Expect on the ISEE guides for the Lower, Middle and Upper Levels, free PDFs that explain the test and scoring and include a paper practice test. ISEE notes they aren't strategy books.
A free practice test with personalized feedback for everyone who registers for the ISEE, from ISEE's official prep partner. Students with an ISEE fee waiver get the partner's full prep package free.
Because official material is limited, save at least one official test for a dress rehearsal close to test day. Use other practice, like the mini test above and our ISEE questions of the day, to build skills in between.
The Lower, Middle and Upper Level ISEE each have four scored multiple-choice sections and an unscored essay. Your level depends on the grade you're applying to: Lower for grades 5–6, Middle for grades 7–8 and Upper for grades 9–12. The Middle and Upper Levels have the same structure; the Upper Level questions are harder.
Verbal Reasoning has synonyms and sentence completions. It's the fastest section: about 30 seconds per question at the Middle and Upper Levels.
Quantitative Reasoning tests math reasoning more than computation. Middle and Upper Level students also see quantitative comparisons, which ask you to compare two quantities.
Reading Comprehension passages come from the sciences and humanities, each followed by several questions on main idea, details, vocabulary in context and inference.
Mathematics Achievement covers grade-level math, from fractions and percents to algebra and geometry.
The essay isn't scored, but a copy goes to every school that receives your scores. Practice it with our ISEE essay prompts and examples.
The online and paper tests have the same questions, timing and chance to change answers. The Primary Levels (grades 2–4) are shorter, with only reading and math, and have no essay. The mini test above covers the Lower, Middle and Upper Levels.
How to take an ISEE practice test like the real thing
A practice test is only as useful as it is realistic. These rules come straight from the official test-day policies:
No calculator. Calculators aren't allowed unless a student has an approved accommodation. Do every problem on scratch paper.
Use the official section times and take the sections in order: Verbal, Quantitative, Reading, Math, then the essay. Take the two 10-minute breaks, and no more.
Answer every question. Scores count only correct answers, so a blank never helps. See our no-penalty guessing strategy.
Match your format. If you'll test online, practice on a screen; if on paper, practice with a printed test and a separate answer sheet.
Write the essay by hand or by typing, the same way you will on test day, in 30 minutes.
How do you score an ISEE practice test?
Count your correct answers in each section; that's your raw score. On the real ISEE, each section's raw score becomes a scaled score, a percentile compared with other students applying to the same grade, and a stanine from 1 to 9. Many schools focus on stanines, and a 5 is average.
Use our ISEE score calculator to estimate stanines from a full-length practice test, and see ISEE stanines explained and what is a good ISEE score for targets. Short quizzes, including the mini test above, are too small for a stanine estimate. Use them to choose what to study.
How many ISEE practice tests to take, and when
Most first-time test takers do best with four to six full-length practice tests spread across two to four months; retakers usually need two or three. The shape of a typical plan:
When
What to do
Week 1
Take the mini test above, then a full-length practice test to set your baseline by section.
Weeks 2–6
Study your two weakest sections with short daily drills and review every miss.
Every 2–3 weeks
Take another full-length test. Compare section by section, not just the total, and review every miss before the next one.
1–2 weeks before
Dress rehearsal: an official practice test in your test format, at the same time of day as your real test.
Families can take the ISEE once per testing season (fall, winter and spring/summer), so up to three times a school year. Plan practice tests around the season you'll test in. For more detail, see how many ISEE practice tests to take and the 3-month ISEE study plan.

Yes. ISEE's free online sample tests copy the look of the real online exam and end with a sample score report. Everyone who registers for the ISEE also gets a free practice test with personalized feedback from ISEE's official prep partner.
A full Lower Level ISEE takes 2 hours 20 minutes, and a full Middle or Upper Level ISEE takes 2 hours 40 minutes, each with two 10-minute breaks. Those times include the 30-minute unscored essay. To practice realistically, take all five parts in one sitting in the official order and timing.
No. Calculators aren't allowed on any ISEE section unless a student has an approved accommodation for calculator use. Practice every math question by hand on scratch paper, including the questions in this mini test.
No. ISEE scores are based only on the number of questions answered correctly, and incorrect answers aren't deducted. Never leave a question blank: if time is running out, guess on every remaining question.
Most first-time test takers do best with four to six full-length practice tests across a two- to four-month prep window; retakers usually need two or three. Take the first one early to find your baseline, study your weakest sections between tests, and save an official test for a dress rehearsal one to two weeks before test day.
No. Stanines compare a student with other students applying to the same grade, and a 15-question sample is far too small to place you reliably. Use the mini test to see the question types, check your pacing and find the section to study first. A timed full-length test gives a much better estimate.
