Army Jobs by ASVAB Score: MOS Line Score Requirements

The Army lets you enlist on your AFQT, which must be at least 31, but it qualifies you for a job on your line scores. Each MOS sets a minimum on 1 or more of 10 Army composites: in the goarmy.com entries read in October 2026, Infantryman (11B) needs a Combat score of 77, Intelligence Analyst (35F) needs a Skilled Technical score of 101, and Cyber Operations Specialist (17C) needs a GT of 110 plus an ST of 112.

Two scores do two different jobs

The goarmy.com ASVAB guide gives you 2 types of scores. The first, your AFQT, decides whether you can join at all, and the Army sets the minimum at 31. That page gives no separate threshold for GED holders, so ask a recruiter how your credential is classified and which preparatory options apply to you.

The second type is what the Army calls category scores, or line scores, and these decide which jobs are open to you. UH-60 Helicopter Repairer (15T) asks for a Mechanical Maintenance score of 104. An applicant with an AFQT of 95 and an MM of 98 cannot take it. An applicant with an AFQT of 45 and an MM of 104 can.

Army line scores sit on a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 20 in the 1997 reference population, according to the score scale report by D. O. Segall. A 100 is average; a 120 is 1 standard deviation above it.

If you retest, goarmy.com counts your most recent score, not your highest. A lower retest replaces the better one, line scores included.

An AFQT of 99 does not qualify you for 17C; a GT of 110 and an ST of 112 do. The AFQT only decides whether you can enlist. Every job is gated by line scores.

The 10 Army composites

Segall's report states that the Army calculates 10 classification composites. One of them, GT, adds your Arithmetic Reasoning standard score and your Verbal Expression score with equal weight, then rescales the sum to a mean of 100. For sums from 94 to 106 the rescaled GT equals the plain sum. The other 9 are weighted blends of GS, AR, MK, MC, EI, AS and VE, with weights chosen to predict success in training. Table 2.7 of the report prints every weight and constant.

VE and AS are not subtests you sit. Verbal Expression (VE) is built from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension, and Auto and Shop (AS) is built from the 2 automotive and shop subtests. The full method for VE is on the Verbal Expression page. Assembling Objects has no weight in any Army composite.

The goarmy.com ASVAB guide describes each composite in shorter terms, and its lists do not always match the weights. It describes Combat as Verbal Expression, Auto and Shop and Mechanical Comprehension, yet Mathematics Knowledge carries the largest Combat weight in Table 2.7. When the 2 disagree, go by the weights: they are what the score computes. The line scores guide covers how the other Services build theirs.

Where study time pays off

Arithmetic Reasoning is one of the heaviest parts of all 10 Army composites in the table above, and Mathematics Knowledge and Verbal Expression join it in 7. All 3 also make up the AFQT, so work on them first if you have not picked a job. Once you have a target, study for its composite: Auto and Shop has a weight of 0.87 in Mechanical Maintenance, larger than any other part of that score.

Line score minimums for representative jobs

Every number below was read on goarmy.com career pages on 13 October 2026, and each entry had last been updated on 18 May 2026. The job data behind each page states the score in up to 4 places: the score block the career page displays, a summary field, and the English and Spanish requirements text. A job appears here only when every statement agreed.

One job in the table accepts 2 score combinations: the 91B page lists a Mechanical Maintenance score of 92, or a Mechanical Maintenance score of 87 together with a GT of 85. Where a row names 2 or 3 composites joined by "and," you must meet every one of them.

Jobs left out of the table

Several popular jobs are missing because goarmy.com contradicts itself on their scores.

Signal Operations Support Specialist (25U), Joint Fire Support Specialist (13F), Human Intelligence Collector (35M) and Ammunition Specialist (89B) had similar mismatches or gaps. For any of these jobs, plan to meet the higher figure and ask a recruiter which standard is in force.

Worked example: from standard scores to GT and ST

Your score sheet reports a standard score for each subtest, on a scale with a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10. The line scores are built from those numbers. Take this applicant:

Example standard scores
SubtestStandard score
General Science (GS)51
Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)50
Word Knowledge (WK)54
Paragraph Comprehension (PC)52
Mathematics Knowledge (MK)53
Electronics Information (EI)47
Auto Information (AI)45
Shop Information (SI)49
Mechanical Comprehension (MC)48

Start with Verbal Expression. On the current scale it is not Word Knowledge plus Paragraph Comprehension. It is 0.654918 times WK plus 0.405617 times PC, minus 3.026712. Here that is 35.37 plus 21.09 minus 3.03, or 53.43, which rounds to a VE of 53.

GT starts from AR plus VE: 50 plus 53 is 103. The scale report then standardizes the Army GT to a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 20: 1.074292 times 103, minus 7.443781, is 103.21, so the GT is 103, the same as the plain sum. This applicant clears the GT 100 required for 42A and 12Y, and falls 7 points short of the GT 110 for 17C.

ST needs Auto and Shop first. AS is 0.539247 times the sum of Auto Information and Shop Information, minus 3.924703: 0.539247 times 94 is 50.69, and minus 3.92 that leaves 46.77, an AS of 47. Now multiply each input by its Table 2.7 weight, add the products and subtract the ST constant of 19.65219.

Skilled Technical worked from the example scores, using Segall Table 2.7
InputScoreST weightProduct
GS510.128656.561
AR500.4901024.505
MK530.4782525.347
MC480.3120714.979
EI470.144936.812
AS (derived)470.2173610.216
VE (derived)530.6217732.954

The 7 products add up to 121.374. Subtract 19.652 and you have 101.722, which rounds to an ST of 102.

An ST of 102 meets the 101 listed for 35F, 35G and 15Q, and the 95 for 25B. It is 4 points short of the 106 for 68K. The same profile gives a Combat score of 100, well above the 77 for 11B, but a Mechanical Maintenance score of 97, short of the 104 for 15T. Its AFQT works out to 50 plus 53 plus 2 times 53, a composite of 209, which converts to the 57th percentile. You can run your own numbers through the line score calculator.

The Future Soldier Preparatory Course for scores below 31

The goarmy.com ASVAB guide describes 2 academic routes for low scores. With a minimum score of 21, you can enter the academic track of the Future Soldier Preparatory Course, a 90-day program that teaches every ASVAB subject and gives you chances to retake the test. With a score between 31 and 49, you may qualify for a shorter version: 30 days of classes and 1 chance to improve your score.

The same page says you may pick a new MOS based on the higher score, depending on the needs of the Army. An expanded version runs the academic track first and then the fitness track, for applicants whose body fat percentage is also above the Army standard.

The course was set to begin as a pilot at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, in August 2022, according to the Army's announcement of 26 July 2022. The announcement set a 90-day maximum stay and let trainees ship to basic training every 3 weeks once they met the Army's accession standards. Its score bands differ from the current goarmy.com wording, so rely on the recruiting page and your recruiter for today's rules. The AFQT improvement guide covers how to study for the 4 subtests that make up the AFQT.

How to find the current requirement for a specific MOS

  1. On goarmy.com, open Careers and Jobs, then Browse Jobs, and find the MOS by its code or title.
  2. Read the Requirements section. Each score appears as a line such as "101 ASVAB Score: Skilled Technical (ST)," and some jobs list a second combination after the word "Or."
  3. Check which components the job is offered in. Some, such as 68V, list Active Duty and the Army Reserve but not the National Guard.
  4. Compare every listed composite with the line scores on your official score sheet, not with a practice estimate.
  5. Ask your recruiter to confirm the standard in force on the day you choose a job, and whether that job has openings.

Your scores can be used for enlistment for up to 2 years from the test date, according to the official ASVAB program, and the Army can revise a job's minimum within that window. The cut score can move while your score stays the same, and tables on other websites often carry numbers from years ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

The goarmy.com ASVAB guide lists an AFQT of at least 31 to enlist. That page does not give a separate number for GED holders, so ask a recruiter how your credential is classified. Qualifying for a specific job is a second, separate check against your line scores.

It depends on the job. In the goarmy.com career entries read in October 2026, Human Resources Specialist (42A) and Geospatial Engineer (12Y) each list a GT of 100, and Cyber Operations Specialist (17C) lists a GT of 110 alongside an ST of 112. GT starts from the sum of your Arithmetic Reasoning standard score and your Verbal Expression score, and the Army rescales that sum to a mean of 100. For sums from 94 to 106 the rescaled GT equals the plain sum.

The goarmy.com Infantryman (11B) page lists a Combat (CO) line score of 77, in an entry last updated in May 2026. Indirect Fire Infantryman (11C) lists the same CO 77. Cavalry Scout (19D) and Armor Crewmember (19K) show CO 77 in English but CO 87 in their Spanish requirements, so confirm those 2 with a recruiter. Your AFQT must also be at least 31.

Your most recent one. The goarmy.com ASVAB guide states that your most recent score, not your highest, is used. A retest that comes in lower replaces the better result, so retest only when your practice scores are clearly above your official ones.

Possibly, through the academic track of the Future Soldier Preparatory Course. The goarmy.com ASVAB guide says applicants with a minimum score of 21 can use that 90-day track, which teaches every ASVAB subject and includes chances to retake the test. A recruiter decides whether a seat is available to you.

The goarmy.com data for Combat Medic Specialist states a Skilled Technical (ST) score of 101 everywhere it appears, and in 3 of its 4 statements also lists a General Technical (GT) score of 107. The score block on the career page itself shows only the ST 101. Because the page disagrees with itself, plan for both and ask a recruiter which standard applies on the day you choose a job.

Arithmetic Reasoning is one of the heaviest parts of all 10 Army composites. Mathematics Knowledge and Verbal Expression, which is built from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension, are among the heaviest parts of 8 each, and Arithmetic Reasoning and Verbal Expression make up GT outright. Auto and Shop dominates Mechanical Maintenance. Assembling Objects feeds no Army line score at all.
