What to study

  • number sense and operations
  • algebraic patterns
  • data analysis
  • probability and statistics
  • geometry
  • measurement

How to approach the section

  1. Translate the question into a model before calculating. Name the unknown, label each quantity with its unit, and identify whether the operation represents a total, a difference, a rate or a fraction of a whole. An embedded calculator executes an operation; it cannot choose that model.
  2. After a lesson, answer a fresh item and explain why the closest competing choice fails. Revisit that reasoning after a delay; recognizing a stored answer is less informative than reproducing the method.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the wrong operation accurately.
  • Reporting the discount instead of the sale price, or mixing boundary units with square units.
