Term / patternMeaning / methodExample
Explicit detailA fact established directly by the text, even when the answer uses a faithful paraphrase.“Rin arrived before the gates opened” supports arriving early, not arriving late.
Supported inferenceA conclusion connected to stated evidence by a limited reasoning step.If a character wraps a fragile bowl before packing it, protecting it from damage is supported; its price is not established.
Main ideaThe central claim or development that explains the important supporting details.A passage about repairing drains, sweeping leaves and clearing gutters develops preventing blocked water flow, not only sweeping leaves.
PurposeWhat the writer seeks to accomplish with the selection or a particular part.Comparing two bridge designs to show their strengths explains tradeoffs; it does not automatically recommend one design.
Vocabulary in contextThe meaning that fits the actual sentence, surrounding ideas and tone.In “The committee tabled the proposal until Friday,” tabled means postponed consideration; furniture is irrelevant.
Scope checkAn answer must not claim more than the evidence establishes. One accessible entrance supports access at that entrance, not accessibility in every room.
