The AP Human Geography exam consists of two main sections:
Section | Question Type | Time | Questions | Exam Weight |
---|---|---|---|---|
Section 1 | Multiple Choice | 1 hour | 60 questions | 50% |
Section 2 | Free Response | 1 hour 15 minutes | 3 questions | 50% |
Total exam time: 2 hours 15 minutes
Section 1: Multiple Choice
60 questions testing your knowledge of human geography concepts
Includes both individual and set-based questions
30-40% of questions reference stimulus materials like maps, tables, charts, graphs, images, infographics, or landscapes
Stimulus materials are evenly split between quantitative and qualitative sources
Section 2: Free Response
Question 1: No stimulus materials
Question 2: Includes one stimulus (data, image, or map)
Question 3: Includes two stimuli (data, images, and/or maps)
Tests ability to describe, explain, and apply geographic concepts
At least one question assesses analysis across geographic scales
The AP Human Geography exam uses a weighted scoring system that combines your performance on both sections. The multiple-choice section accounts for 50% of your score, and the free-response section makes up the other 50%.
Your raw scores from each section are converted into a composite score, which is then converted to the final AP score of 1-5. The distribution of scores from the most recent exam was:
AP Human Geography Score | Percentage of Students |
---|---|
5 | 17.9% |
4 | 20.5% |
3 | 17.8% |
2 | 14.3% |
1 | 29.5% |
A score of 3 or higher is generally considered passing, though many top colleges only award credit for scores of 4 or 5. For college admissions purposes, a 4 or 5 is considered a strong score.
To earn a high score (4 or 5), students typically need to demonstrate:
Strong understanding of geographic concepts and models
Ability to analyze spatial relationships
Skills in interpreting maps, data, and other geographic information
Clear written communication
Application of geographic concepts to real-world scenarios
