Flaw: 27 Fallacies and Their Disguises

The concept
Passage · A textbook post-hoc stimulusexcerpt · marked

An automotive executive: "Our company expanded its engineering staff by 20 percent last year. Since then, customer satisfaction scores have risen sharply, though operating costs have also climbed. Clearly, the staffing expansion caused the gains in customer satisfaction."

1Premise: "Engineering staff was expanded 20% last year" — a fact about a single time-ordered event.
2Premise: "Customer satisfaction scores rose afterward" — temporal correlation only. No comparison group, no ruling-out of other concurrent changes.
3The flaw: Conclusion leaps from "B happened after A" to "A caused B." Classic post hoc — Causal family. The credited Flaw answer simply names the gap: temporal sequence alone does not establish causation.

A flaw is a broken inference — not a factual mistake. The premises are treated as true; what's wrong is the leap from premises to conclusion. The good news: the LSAT recycles the same 27 named flaws across six parent families on every administration, so once you can name the family on sight, Flaw collapses from analytical puzzle to pattern-matching.

Stat to remember:Six parent families — Scope, Conditional, Causal, Sampling, Analogy, Internal — cover essentially every Flaw question on every real LSAT. The 27 named children just refine the classification.
