What SAT Reading and Writing practice covers

The Digital SAT combines reading and writing into one 200–800 section. You'll see short passages (about 25–150 words) with one question each. Your score report breaks performance into four domains — so a plateau is almost never “being bad at English” and almost always one or two domains quietly costing points.

Information and Ideas

Craft and Structure

  • Words in Context — Determine the meaning of a word as it is used in the passage, or choose the word that best fits the sentence.
  • Text Structure and Purpose — Identify why a sentence or paragraph is there and how the passage is organized overall.
  • Cross-Text Connections — Compare two short paired passages and determine how one author would respond to the other.

Expression of Ideas

  • Transitions — Select the transition word or phrase that most logically connects two sentences.
  • Rhetorical Synthesis — Given a list of notes, choose the sentence that best uses that information to accomplish a stated goal.

Standard English Conventions

  • Boundaries — Fix punctuation and sentence boundaries, including commas, semicolons, colons, dashes, and apostrophes.
  • Form, Structure, and Sense — Correct subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement, verb tense, modifiers, and parallel structure.

How to practice effectively

Treat this page like a short daily workout: answer today's set under light time pressure, review every explanation, and note which skills you miss. When a pattern shows up, rotate into focused drills — grammar, reading passages, or vocabulary — then return to mixed sets.

Study tip: short passages reward careful reading more than skimming. Misreading one clause can sink the whole question — slow down on the stem, then move fast through the choices.

Pair R&W with SAT Math practice and our mixed SAT Questions of the Day so both halves of the composite stay even.
