Vocabulary in Context

5–7 questions per Verbal section · highest-frequency RC type·Difficulty: Hard
The concept
Passage · The Shifting Foundations of Global Tradeexcerpt · marked

For much of the twentieth century, economists held that free trade would arrest the economic decline of developing nations. Yet many nations in Sub-Saharan Africa found that trade liberalization actually compromised their domestic industries, as cheap imports undercut local producers. The currency of the free-trade argument has diminished considerably among policy analysts, though it retains powerful champions in international lending institutions.

1Target word: "currency" — looks like it should mean money. The dictionary trap is sitting right there in the answer choices ("financial value," "monetary unit").
2Context clue: "diminished considerably among policy analysts" — analysts evaluate ideas, not money. The argument's INFLUENCE is fading, not its dollar value.
3The right meaning: In context, "currency" = widespread acceptance / circulation of an idea. The substitution test confirms it.

A Vocabulary in Context question is not a vocabulary test — it's a reading test. The GRE almost always tests a SECONDARY meaning of a familiar word, and the answer choice that "looks most like the dictionary definition" is almost always the trap. The right answer is the meaning forced by the surrounding sentences.

Stat to remember:The most familiar definition is the trap on roughly 75% of GRE Vocabulary in Context questions. Slow down whenever an "obvious" choice jumps out.
