Learn about the upcoming changes to official SAT practice tests, including new tests 7-10 and the removal of tests 1-3.
The College Board has announced significant changes coming to the official SAT practice tests in February 2025. Here's everything you need to know about these changes and how they might affect your test preparation.
Several important changes are coming to the official SAT practice tests:
Practice Tests 1-3 will be removed from Bluebook on February 3, 2025
Four new practice tests will be added: Tests 7-10
Tests 4-6 will remain available
After these changes, students will have access to a total of seven practice tests (Tests 4-10) through the Bluebook app.
While the College Board maintains that Practice Tests 1-3 accurately reflect the digital SAT format and difficulty, student feedback tells a different story:
Many students reported that Tests 1-3 were noticeably easier than their actual SAT exams
The release of Practice Tests 5 and 6 showed a clear increase in difficulty level, particularly in the Reading and Writing sections
The math sections in Tests 1-3 had fewer complex problem-solving questions compared to recent actual tests
It appears the College Board may be responding to this feedback by replacing the earlier tests with more balanced ones that better reflect the current test difficulty. This change should help students develop more realistic expectations and better prepare for the actual exam.
Here's what we know about the new practice tests:
Practice Test 7 will be completely new
Practice Tests 8-10 will include both new questions and selected questions from former Tests 1-3
PDF versions of Tests 7-10 will be available on the College Board website
The difficulty level will remain consistent with current tests
Key dates to keep in mind:
February 3, 2025: Last day to complete Practice Tests 1-3 and retain your scores
February 2025: Release of new Practice Tests 7-10 (exact date TBA)
Summer 2025: Khan Academy will release detailed walk-through courses for Tests 7-10
If you're planning to take the SAT in 2025, here's what you should do:
If you're currently using Tests 1-3, complete them before February 3, 2025, to keep your scores and feedback
Continue using Tests 4-6 as they will remain available
Plan to incorporate the new Tests 7-10 into your study schedule once they're released
Use the Student Question Bank (SQB) and Khan Academy resources to supplement your practice
The College Board emphasizes that these changes are designed to provide the most relevant practice resources based on data from millions of test-takers. Students who have only taken Tests 1-3 are encouraged to take an additional practice test closer to their actual test date.
