SHSAT: Reading comprehension passage sets
Interpret evidence, ideas, language and literary effects.
Updated October 3, 2026
A method you can use
- Read the complete passage and briefly describe its central development. Keep track of changes in a speaker’s attitude, the function of evidence and the connection between paragraphs.
- For inference, cite the smallest set of details that supports the whole claim. A repeated word in an option is not evidence that its claim follows.
- For vocabulary or figurative language, substitute the proposed meaning in the local context and ask what role the expression plays in the whole passage.
- For paired perspectives, identify both agreement and disagreement. An answer about only one text cannot establish a comparison. Review linked answers before submitting an official passage set.
