Testing Every Link in a Line of Reasoning

How does Du Bois move from an unasked question to a claim about distance between social contact and understanding?

Short answer

He establishes a barrier, illustrates indirect approaches, exposes the suppressed question, and lets that contrast support a bounded claim about failed direct exchange.

Know firstDistinguishing claim sequence from plot summary · Naming an inferential warrant

A sequence becomes reasoning when the links are named

The opening claim is relational: a question exists “between” the speaker and “the other world,” but it remains unasked. Du Bois then distinguishes delicacy from difficulty, acknowledges that people still circle the question, and gives three substitute remarks. The direct question appears only after those examples. That order turns social encounters into evidence of avoidance rather than a random catalog of comments.

The necessary warrant is that speaking around the premise—treating Black life as “a problem”—preserves distance even during apparent contact. The passage leaves motives open through “curiously or compassionately,” so it does not prove that every questioner is hostile. Nor does the single paragraph establish every later claim about double-consciousness. It creates the problem the chapter will explain.

The unasked question

Between me and the other world there is ever an unasked question: unasked by some through feelings of delicacy; by others through the difficulty of rightly framing it. All, nevertheless, flutter round it. They approach me in a half-hesitant sort of way, eye me curiously or compassionately, and then, instead of saying directly, How does it feel to be a problem? they say, I know an excellent colored man in my town; or, I fought at Mechanicsville; or, Do not these Southern outrages make your blood boil? At these I smile, or am interested, or reduce the boiling to a simmer, as the occasion may require. To the real question, How does it feel to be a problem? I answer seldom a word.

Evaluate a line rather than list it

  1. State the passage’s governing claim.
  2. Assign each sentence or paragraph a reasoning job.
  3. Supply the warrant between adjacent moves.
  4. Ask whether each move advances, qualifies, or complicates the thesis.
  5. Mark where the available evidence stops.

Keep these three ideas

  • A line of reasoning requires relations among moves, not a sentence-by-sentence summary.
  • A warrant explains why evidence advances the claim.
  • Qualifications and limits are part of the reasoning, not obstacles to it.
