Upload a transcript, skip the essay, and a Michigan student can now get admitted to any of 20 colleges before they've written a single application. It's real — and it's not a substitute for the rest of your list.
The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) opened its MI College Match portal on Wednesday, August 26. Coverage of the launch reports that Michigan high schoolers can now build a free profile — grades and a transcript, no essays or letters of recommendation — and receive direct admission offers from participating colleges without submitting a separate application to each one.
Twenty colleges have signed on: 11 private institutions — including Albion College, Alma College, Cleary University, Davenport University, Kalamazoo College, Spring Arbor University, and the University of Olivet — and 9 public institutions, among them two University of Michigan regional campuses, six community colleges, and a tribal college. The University of Michigan's flagship Ann Arbor campus is not part of the program.
MI College Match will be embedded in more than 350 Michigan high schools through MCAN's existing College Bound Michigan initiative. Students who complete their profile by the September 21 priority deadline will get offers on October 5; students who create a profile later will still receive offers, released monthly on a rolling basis.
Direct admissions keeps quietly expanding, and this is one of the more ambitious versions of it — a whole state, one portal, twenty colleges, no essay required.
For a student who was never going to apply anywhere outside their hometown, or who assumed college simply wasn't affordable or reachable, that's a genuinely useful safety net. It costs nothing and takes less time than a single supplemental essay.
This program runs on self-reported academic data, not ambition. A Michigan student with a finished college list and a plan for early action should still spend the ten minutes to build a MI College Match profile — an unexpected acceptance from a regional public or a solid private college is a real option to hold in your pocket while regular decisions are still pending.
Hit the September 21 deadline if you can. Missing it doesn't shut you out — offers keep going out monthly — but the first round is the one with the most schools deciding at once.
None of the 20 schools here is a household reach name, and Ann Arbor's flagship campus opted out. That's not a knock on the program — it's exactly what direct admissions is built for: matching qualified students to colleges that would genuinely take them, not manufacturing offers from schools with single-digit acceptance rates.
Treat a MI College Match offer the way you'd treat a strong likely school: real, worth having, and not a reason to stop building the rest of a balanced list.
A program embedded in 350-plus high schools is only as good as whether counselors actually walk students through it. If you're a Michigan junior or senior and nobody has mentioned MI College Match to you, don't wait for a school assembly — go build the profile yourself. The whole point of direct admissions is reaching students who wouldn't otherwise have applied at all.
