The ACT is above all a pacing test, so a good ACT study plan spends most of its time on timed practice, not passive review. The arc: take a full timed diagnostic, shore up English grammar and Math content, drill each section against the clock, then take full practice tests and review by section. Most students prep 20–60 hours over four to eight weeks.

  • Take one full-length official practice test, strictly timed, in a single sitting (include the real between-section break).
  • Score every section and compute your Composite as the average of English, Math, and Reading.
  • Categorize every miss by section, question type, and cause: content gap, careless error, or ran out of time.
  • Note how far you got in each section before time ran out, set target scores, and build your week-by-week calendar.

Week 2Pacing & Timing Foundations • English: Punctuation & Sentence Structure • English: Grammar & Usage~6h

  • Memorize per-section pacing: English ~42s, Math ~67s, Reading/Science ~60–67s per question.
  • Learn the two-pass method: answer every quick question first, flag and skip the slow ones, return with remaining time.
  • Adopt “letter-of-the-day” — never leave a blank (there's no wrong-answer penalty).
  • Practice checkpoint pacing (e.g., English: 25 questions done by the 17-minute mark).
  • Master commas (and when NOT to use one), semicolons, colons, dashes, apostrophes, and end punctuation.
  • Identify independent vs. dependent clauses; fix comma splices, run-ons, and fragments.
  • Drill the “period = semicolon” test and FANBOYS coordinating conjunctions.
  • Complete two timed English passages and review every miss by rule.
  • Master subject–verb and pronoun–antecedent agreement (including tricky separated subjects).
  • Handle verb tense/consistency, pronoun case, and adjective vs. adverb.
  • Cover modifiers (dangling/misplaced), parallel structure, and common idioms.
  • Drill mixed grammar sets and log recurring error types.

Week 3Full-length timed practice test + review~4h

  • Take a full official test under exact timing, in one sitting, with the real break.
  • Simulate test-day conditions (morning start, approved calculator, no phone).
  • Review every miss — why the right answer is right and why yours is wrong — and log it.

Week 4English: Rhetoric & Concision • Math: Pre-Algebra & Elementary Algebra • Math: Intermediate Algebra & Functions~6h

  • Choose transitions and connectors by the relationship between ideas (however, therefore, for example).
  • When two choices are both correct, pick the shortest — concision beats wordiness.
  • Handle add/delete/relevance questions and sentence/paragraph ordering.
  • Practice word-choice, tone, and “would this accomplish the author's goal” questions.
  • Master fractions, decimals, percents, ratios/proportions, and number properties.
  • Cover exponents/roots, absolute value, and basic statistics (mean, median, mode, range).
  • Solve linear equations, inequalities, and translate word problems into expressions.
  • Do a timed 15-question set and separate careless from concept errors.
  • Master quadratics (factoring, the quadratic formula), systems, and function notation f(x).
  • Cover exponential/radical expressions, sequences, logarithms, and light complex numbers.
  • Handle probability, combinations/permutations, and data/statistics interpretation.
  • Build and rehearse a personal formula sheet — the ACT provides no formulas.

Week 5Math: Coordinate & Plane Geometry • Math: Trigonometry & Calculator Strategy • Reading: Passage Strategy & Pacing~6h

  • Master slope, distance, midpoint, equations of lines, and graphing.
  • Cover angles, triangles (including special right triangles), circles, polygons, and the Pythagorean theorem.
  • Handle area, perimeter, surface area, and volume.
  • Do a timed geometry set, sketching and labeling every figure.
  • Learn SOHCAHTOA, the unit circle, basic identities, and the laws of sines/cosines.
  • Cover trig graphs (amplitude/period) and matrices.
  • Know your approved calculator cold, but solve by hand when it's faster.
  • If you're targeting below ~28, deprioritize the hardest trig items and bank time elsewhere.
  • Learn the fixed passage order and budget about 10 minutes per passage.
  • Start with your strongest passage type to lock in points.
  • Test passage-first vs. questions-first and commit to the faster method for you.
  • Annotate each paragraph's main idea in three to five words to cut re-reading.

  • Go evidence-first: put your finger on the line that proves the answer before committing.
  • Recognize trap answers (true statements the passage doesn't support; extreme wording).
  • Drill two timed passages and review every miss for why the right answer is right and yours is wrong.
  • Read graphs and tables fast: trends, direct/inverse relationships, interpolation/extrapolation.
  • On Research Summaries, identify the independent/dependent variables, the control, and what each experiment shows.
  • Remember ~90% of questions are answered from the data on the page — it's reading with charts, not a content exam.
  • Do graph-reading drills for the fastest point gains (no biology/chemistry review needed).
  • Map each scientist/student's core claim and the evidence they cite.
  • Answer “which viewpoint would agree/disagree with X” and point-of-difference questions.
  • Handle the small number of “outside knowledge” items some forms include.
  • Save this (usually the reading-heaviest) passage for last to protect your pace.

Week 8Final review & test week~4h

  • No new content — taper volume to stay sharp and rested.
  • Do two or three light timed section drills; a final short timed section two to three days out (not a full test).
  • Review the error log, formula sheet, and grammar-rules list one last time.
  • Confirm logistics (admission ticket, photo ID, approved calculator + fresh batteries) and prioritize sleep two nights before.

How the ACT Study Plan Works

Every timeline follows the same five phases; a shorter plan compresses the early phases while a longer one adds practice and review. Here's the job of each phase:

  1. Diagnostic & baseline. Take a full, timed official ACT practice test to get a baseline Composite and find weak sections.
  2. Content foundations. Review English grammar rules and Math content, and learn Reading (and optional Science) pacing strategy.
  3. Targeted practice. Do timed section drills that target your weak areas, and review every miss.
  4. Full-length tests & review. Take full, timed practice tests, then review section by section.
  5. Final review & test week. Confirm test-day logistics (calculator, bubbling), do a light review, and rest before the test.
Always practice under the clock. The ACT gives you less than a minute per question in some sections, so timing is the skill that separates scores. From the first week, do your section practice under the real time limit rather than untimed — then review every miss to see whether it was a content gap or a pacing decision.

ACT Section Strategies

A schedule tells you when to study; these are the highest-leverage tactics for how to study — and how to execute on test day — for each section.

English (~42 sec/question — the fastest section)

  • When two choices are both grammatically correct, pick the shortest, clearest one — concision beats wordiness.
  • Read the whole sentence and surrounding context, not just the underlined portion.
  • Trust your ear only as a starting point; confirm with the actual rule (comma splices, agreement, modifiers).
  • Checkpoint: about 25 questions done by the 17-minute mark.

Math (~67 sec/question; easy → hard)

  • Do a two-pass sweep: answer the quick ones first, flag anything over ~90 seconds, and return.
  • Memorize your formulas — the ACT gives you none; with 4 answer choices now, plug-in and back-solve are efficient.
  • Use the calculator strategically; hand-solving or estimating is often faster.
  • If short on time, guess-and-move on the hardest end (often trig) rather than sinking minutes into one item.

Reading (~67 sec/question; ~10 min per passage)

  • Start with your strongest passage type to bank points; don't necessarily go in printed order.
  • Evidence-first: find the exact line that proves your answer before choosing; reject “true but unsupported” traps.
  • Annotate each paragraph's main idea in a few words to speed up line-reference questions.
  • Don't over-read — you're hunting for support, not studying the passage.

Science (optional, ~60 sec/question)

  • Treat it as “reading with charts” — about 90% of answers come straight from the graphs, tables, and experiments.
  • Go to the figures first; skim the intro, then read only what a question sends you back to.
  • Order the passages Data Representation → Research Summaries → Conflicting Viewpoints (save the reading-heavy one for last).

Common ACT Study Mistakes

Most stalled scores trace back to a handful of avoidable habits. Watch for these:

  • Poor pacing and refusing to move on — for strong scorers, most lost points come from clock mismanagement, not lack of knowledge.
  • Leaving questions blank — there's no wrong-answer penalty, so always bubble a “letter-of-the-day” on anything unreached.
  • Chasing volume instead of accuracy — the goal is the most questions correct, not the most attempted.
  • Over-reading in Reading and Science — studying passages like a textbook burns the clock.
  • Reviewing untimed only — content review without timed practice never builds ACT speed; drill under the clock from week one.
  • Over-relying on the calculator in Math, and picking the longest, “fancier” English answer instead of the concise correct one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most students study 20–60 hours over four to eight weeks. The right length depends on your diagnostic score and target Composite — a small bump can take a few weeks of timed practice, while a large jump usually needs two to three months.

Plan on 4–8 hours a week for a one- to two-month timeline. Because the ACT is a pacing test, several shorter timed sessions a week beat one long untimed cram.

Two weeks is enough for a last-minute pacing tune-up, not a full content rebuild. Focus on taking timed sections, learning the directions cold to save time, and reviewing your most common mistakes — don't try to relearn every topic.

Only if your target colleges want a Science score. On the Enhanced ACT (2025), Science is optional and is not part of your Composite (English, Math, and Reading). If you don't need it, spend that time on the three Composite sections.
