Useful when a school publishes its averages in the old scale and you want to know where your new score would have landed.
A Academic Average of 420 on the new scale is closest to 20 on the old 1–30 scale — an exact match in the ADA table.
The ADA describes these as approximately equivalent scores, not exact translations. The old scale had 30 steps and the new one has 41, so several low old scores collapse onto the same new score and the reverse mapping is not always unique.

Reading old advice safely
The practical problem with the scale change is not the arithmetic, it is that the old numbers are still everywhere. A school page quoting a “20 average”, an adviser talking about “breaking 21”, a forum thread about a “19 AA” — all of those predate the switch. Convert the target rather than your own score, and you can keep using that material without recalibrating your expectations by accident.

No, and this catches people out. Each reported score has its own column in the concordance because each has its own distribution. An old 20 converts to 420 in Biology but 430 in Perceptual Ability, so you have to convert each line of an old report separately rather than applying one rule to all of them.
