What’s on GRE Math?

There is no section literally named “math” on the GRE — the quantitative section is Quantitative Reasoning. The good news: the math itself is high-school level. There is no calculus, no trigonometry, and an on-screen calculator is provided. Four content areas are tested:

  • Arithmetic — integers, fractions, exponents, roots, percentages, ratios.
  • Algebra — linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions, word problems.
  • Geometry — lines, angles, triangles, circles, area, volume, and the coordinate plane.
  • Data analysis — statistics, probability, and interpreting tables and graphs.

Is GRE math hard?

For most test-takers, the challenge isn’t advanced math — it’s speed and traps. Questions are designed to be quick if you spot the shortcut and slow if you grind through the arithmetic. The section is also section-adaptive: how you do on the first math section determines the difficulty of the second.

Study tip: On quantitative comparison questions, plug in strategic numbers — including negatives, fractions, and zero. If different values change which quantity is larger, the answer is “cannot be determined.”

How to practice GRE math effectively

1. Memorize the formulas

The GRE gives you no formula sheet. Lock in area, perimeter, volume, the special right triangles, exponent rules, and the core statistics formulas so recall is automatic.

2. Estimate before you compute

Many questions — especially quantitative comparison — are faster to reason about than to calculate. Practice deciding when an exact answer is unnecessary.

3. Drill data interpretation

Tables, graphs, and charts reward speed and care with units and scales. These come in sets, so a small edge compounds across questions.

4. Review every explanation
