TOEFL Score 2.0: What an A2 Band Means

A 2.0 is the first band at CEFR A2 — basic, routine English. You can handle short everyday exchanges, but academic English is still mostly out of reach.

What a 2.0 means

CEFR A2 describes someone who can understand frequently used expressions about familiar matters — shopping, local places, work, family — and communicate in simple, routine tasks. On the TOEFL, that looks like reasonable success on short everyday items and very limited success on academic passages and talks.

Look at your section bands. A 2.0 overall can hide a real spread: for example, a 2.5 in Reading next to a 1.5 in Speaking. Because the overall score is an average, the weakest section is usually the cheapest to raise.

What a 2.0 is typically enough for

A 2.0 is below typical requirements for undergraduate or graduate admission. Some institutions use TOEFL scores to place students into intensive English or foundation programs, where entry levels vary widely. Always confirm the specific requirement with the institution.

Always check the institution. Requirements are set by each university, program, employer or agency, not by ETS, and many are still written on the retired 0–120 scale. Convert old-scale numbers with the score converter and look for section minimums.

Why the daily-life tasks matter most at band 2

The 2026 TOEFL includes three tasks built on everyday rather than academic English: Read in Daily Life, Listen to a Conversation and Listen to an Announcement. These are where an A2 test taker can collect points most reliably — they test purpose, times, places and next steps, which A2 learners already handle in real life.

Practice them deliberately. For every notice, message or announcement, answer three questions before looking at the options: who is it for, what is happening, and what should the reader or listener do?

What separates 2.0 from 2.5

Moving up half a band in a section usually comes down to one or two task types. On the old 0–30 section scale, 2.5 begins at 4 in Reading, 6 in Listening, 13 in Speaking, 11 in Writing.

Reading

At 2.5 you reliably understand everyday notices and messages, including dates and conditions, and restore more of the common words in Complete the Words.

Listening

At 2.5 you follow a whole short conversation or announcement — the problem, the request, the next step — not only isolated phrases.

Speaking

At 2.5 your repetitions keep most small words and endings, and interview answers stay on topic for most of a 45-second practice window.

Writing

At 2.5 most Build a Sentence items are correct for simple sentences, and your email addresses each required point in at least a sentence.

Frequently Asked Questions

The TOEFL has no pass or fail. A 2.0 is a valid score that reports CEFR A2; whether it is enough depends entirely on the institution or purpose, and for degree admission it almost never is.

ETS’s concordance places an overall 2.0 at about 24–33 on the retired 0–120 scale.

ETS’s published comparison lists IELTS 4.5 as comparable to a TOEFL total of 2.0. It is a comparison of typical performance, not an exchange rate — institutions set their own requirements for each test.

Any four section bands whose average rounds to 2.0 — the overall score is the mean of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, rounded to the nearest half band. For example: 2.0 / 2.0 / 2.0 / 2.0; 2.5 / 2.0 / 2.0 / 1.5; 2.5 / 2.5 / 1.5 / 1.5. Check individual sections as well, because many programs set section minimums.
