A 2.5 sits at the top of CEFR A2, one half band below B1. The step to 3.0 is a meaningful one: it is the point where you start to cope with English on unfamiliar topics, not only routine ones.
Band 2.5 still reports A2, but it signals a test taker who handles everyday tasks fairly reliably and is beginning to follow longer material. The gap to band 3 is usually not vocabulary alone — it is the ability to keep track of meaning across several sentences: who said what, why, and what changed.
This is also the band where the Writing section can move fastest. Build a Sentence makes up ten of the twelve Writing items, and the grammar it tests — question order, agreement, verb forms — is learnable in weeks.
A 2.5 is below the usual minimum for direct degree admission. It may meet entry requirements for some intensive English, pathway or foundation programs, which vary a great deal — confirm the exact requirement, including any section minimums, with each provider.
Moving from 2.5 to 3.0 crosses a CEFR boundary — from A2 to B1 — and that change appears on your score report. For some pathway programs and placement decisions, a B1 label matters more than the half band itself.
Because the overall band is the rounded average of four sections, the quickest route is usually lifting your two weakest sections by half a band each. Use the score calculator to see exactly which combinations of section bands average and round to 3.0.
Moving up half a band in a section usually comes down to one or two task types. On the old 0–30 section scale, 3.0 begins at 6 in Reading, 9 in Listening, 16 in Speaking, 13 in Writing.
Band 3 readers follow the main idea of a short academic passage and answer straightforward detail questions, not only everyday texts.
Band 3 listeners follow the main point of a short academic talk and catch why a speaker in a conversation says something.
Band 3 speakers repeat medium-length sentences accurately and give interview answers with a clear answer plus one reason.
Band 3 writers get most Build a Sentence items right, including questions, and write an email that covers all three required points.
