TOEFL Score 6.0: The Top of the Scale

A 6.0 is the highest TOEFL score and the only band ETS maps to CEFR C2 — mastery. Overall 6.0 needs your four section bands to average at least 5.75 — two 6.0s and two 5.5s is the minimum combination without a lower section.

What a 6.0 means

C2 describes someone who understands virtually everything they hear or read and expresses themselves spontaneously, fluently and precisely, even in complex situations. On the TOEFL, band 6 means near-perfect performance in the upper modules and in every constructed response.

On the old scale band 6.0 spans about 114–120. The rounding rule makes the overall 6.0 demanding: sections of 6.0, 6.0, 6.0 and 5.0 average 5.75 and round up to 6.0, but 6.0, 6.0, 5.5 and 5.5 also average 5.75 — while 6.0, 5.5, 5.5 and 5.5 averages 5.625 and rounds to 5.5.

What a 6.0 is typically enough for

A 6.0 is above any standard published requirement. It will not distinguish you in admissions beyond meeting the threshold, but it removes any question about English proficiency, including for programs with demanding section minimums.

Always check the institution. Requirements are set by each university, program, employer or agency, not by ETS, and many are still written on the retired 0–120 scale. Convert old-scale numbers with the score converter and look for section minimums.

What to do with a 6.0

Stop preparing for the TOEFL. Send the score and move your effort to whatever else your application or job needs. Scores are valid for two years from the test date, so if your plans run longer than that, note the expiry date now.

If you are preparing to reach 6.0 rather than holding one, the work is error elimination: full practice tests, careful review of every lost item, and rehearsal until timing feels easy rather than tight.

What a 6.0 looks like in each section

There is no band above 6.0, so the question is what it takes to stay there in every section.

Reading

Holding 6.0 in Reading means near-perfect accuracy in the upper module — including Complete the Words items where one wrong letter costs the point.

Listening

Holding 6.0 in Listening means efficient notes that capture every relationship between ideas, so no detail question surprises you.

Speaking

Holding 6.0 in Speaking means exact repetition and fully developed, effortless interview answers on any topic.

Writing

Holding 6.0 in Writing means no Build a Sentence errors and responses that are precise, natural and complete within the time.

Not exactly — band 6.0 covers about 114–120 on the retired 0–120 scale, so a 6.0 includes but is not limited to a perfect 120.

ETS’s comparison lists IELTS 8.0, 8.5 and 9.0 as comparable to a TOEFL total of 6.0.

Any four section bands whose average rounds to 6.0 — the overall score is the mean of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, rounded to the nearest half band. For example: 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0. Check individual sections as well, because many programs set section minimums.
