A 5.5 is an excellent score — the top of CEFR C1, comparable to roughly 107–113 on the old scale. It clears nearly every published requirement, and the remaining half band to 6.0 is the hardest on the test.
Band 5.5 reports C1. Test takers here understand demanding academic English quickly and accurately and express themselves precisely, with only occasional lapses. The difference between 5.5 and 6.0 lies almost entirely in consistency: a 6.0 requires near-perfect performance across all four sections.
Because the overall score is a rounded average, a 5.5 can be built in several ways — four 5.5s, or for example 6.0, 6.0, 5.0 and 5.0 (an average of exactly 5.5). If you have a 5.0 section, that is the one to look at.
A 5.5 meets the stated English requirement at almost all universities and graduate programs, including highly selective ones. A small number of programs and professional bodies set specific section requirements at the top of the scale; if one of yours does, check the section line rather than the overall.
Usually not. English proficiency tests work as thresholds: admissions committees check that the requirement is met and then look elsewhere. Moving from 5.5 to 6.0 rarely changes an outcome, and the time is usually better spent on the parts of an application that are compared between candidates — for US graduate programs, often the GRE.
The exceptions are concrete: a program or employer with a stated requirement above your score in one section, or a scholarship with an explicit threshold. If none of those applies, keep the score.
Moving up half a band in a section usually comes down to one or two task types. On the old 0–30 section scale, 6.0 begins at 29 in Reading, 28 in Listening, 28 in Speaking, 29 in Writing.
A 6.0 reader is almost flawless in the upper module, including the hardest Complete the Words items and fine-grained inference.
A 6.0 listener misses essentially nothing, even in long talks with digressions and changes of direction.
A 6.0 speaker repeats every sentence exactly and answers every interview question with effortless, precise, well-organized speech.
A 6.0 writer is error-free in Build a Sentence and produces responses that are precise, natural and fully developed within the time.
