How to use the cards

  1. Look at the word and try to say what it means before you flip the card.
  2. Mark “Know it” only if you could have explained it without help.
  3. At the end of the deck, review the words you are still learning.
  4. Turn on “Hide words I know” for later sessions, and come back tomorrow.

For tables, context notes and a quiz for each theme, use the TOEFL vocabulary list.

What is in each deck

The 1200 cards are split into three decks of 400 words each. Each deck has ten themes of about 40 words, and inside a deck you can filter the cards by theme. The tiers are our own study levels, not official ETS or CEFR levels.

Easy deck (400 words). Everyday campus words for directions, schedules, classes and messages: words to use, not only recognize. Themes: Campus places and movement, Schedule and campus services, Classroom work, Study materials and records, People and teamwork, Messages and conversation, Problems and solutions, Time and quantity, Features and relationships, Everyday learning and change.

Medium deck (400 words). General academic words for arguments, research, processes and society, common in passages and talks. Themes: Argument and interpretation, Research and data, Cause, process, and change, Society and economy, Institutions and policy, Living systems and ecology, Earth and physical systems, History, language, and culture, Learning, memory, and behavior, Academic and campus administration.

Hard deck (400 words). Advanced and specialist academic words, mostly for recognition in Reading and Listening. Themes: Advanced reasoning and argument, Advanced research and measurement, Complex processes and systems, Advanced life science and ecology, Advanced Earth and physical science, Advanced society, economy, and policy, Advanced history, arts, and language, Advanced cognition and discourse, Advanced academic action verbs, Quantitative and technology language.

Every word with its definition, theme by theme, is on the TOEFL vocabulary list; each theme page adds a self-check quiz.

Start with the easy deck and mark honestly. Move to medium once most easy cards are “Know it”. The hard deck is mostly recognition vocabulary for academic passages and talks.

Short daily sessions work better than long occasional ones. Ten to fifteen minutes a day, with “Hide words I know” switched on, keeps you focused on the words that still need work.
